Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Proverbs 16:32 “Better a patient man than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city”

How many of us have dreamed of being famous? The Bible tells us that it is better to be patient than to be famous or a war hero. This is not what the world tells us on TV, in books,  in the class room, or on magazine racks. We are encouraged to become thinner, prettier, stronger, and richer. King Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, found that all these things were a waste. Some of the richest and most famous men and women in the world would agree with King Solomon as they too are miserable and poor in heart. Money and fame does not bring happiness.

My grandfather was never rich nor was he decorated as a war veteran. Every Memorial Day, he went to the graveyard to lay a wreath on a family member’s gravestone that had sacrificed their lives during a time of war. My grandfather was not able to join the army because he had to help around the farm. He never wore a ribbon of heroism, but instead displayed a patience and self-control that gave him his own lasting legacy. He inspired the hearts of all those who knew him to do the same.

Many of us work hard in school for A’s. We go to work and want recognition and promotion. How many of us go to these places to show patience to others and to bite our lip and think before we speak to others. The Bible’s “call of duty” to us is to work very hard at making peace with others and being patient even when it is not convenient. This is the modern warfare we have been given. We do not need M-16’s, crossbows, and an attack helicopter to threaten others with. We need a humble and soft spirit, that God can use to bring our friends and enemies to Him.

When was the last time I was impatient and angry?

Why did I become angry?

How can I improve and become more patient with others?
