God’s “Duck Call”

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise,  making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Ephesians 5:16-17

Phil Robertson, of the popular A&E series Duck Dynasty, spoke at Saddleback Church in California last week. Phil is a born again Christian and created a duck call in 1972 that has led his family into notoriety as over 10 million people tuned in to watch their last episode. Controversy broke out in their latest filming as the producers did not want to film the family as they prayed around the dinner table. The Robertson family advised that they would continue to pray or would not film another series. Prayer won out.

During Phil’s sermon last week, he spoke of a phone call he received years ago in which a man had called him to order a duck call. During the phone call, the man cursed many times and took God’s name in vain. Phil asked the caller why he would curse someone who had done so much for him and then invited the caller to come to his company for a sit-down meeting so that he could tell him more about Jesus. One week later, the man responded to the Duck Commander business and asked Jesus into his heart. This man is now a leader in a church in Alabama.

Phil is not a seminary student or a “religious major”. He’s a long bearded “redneck” who saw an “interruption” as an opportunity to market not just his duck call, but his Savior. In the end, duck calls will come and go. Books will collect dust. Television series will be replaced with new ones. DVD’s will lay in a $5.00 bin.

Eternity last forever. At the end of the day, we need to be constantly looking for life’s interruptions, as God’s “duck call” to us, to lead others to him.
