God Uses Cracked Pots

Author and “Women of Faith” speaker Patsy Clairmont wrote a book called “God Uses Cracked Pots” and she always says that she is the visual aide. Clairmont struggled for years with Agoraphobia in which she was afraid of leaving her own home. She struggled with this condition even after becoming a Christian. After 6 years of staying in her bed, she got up and began to let the Lord use her. She clung to the verses of 2 Corinthians 4:6-7 “ For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.”

Clairmont saw herself as a woman with many cracks and fractures. She did not think God could use someone as broken as she was. However, in reading this Scripture, Clairmont began to see that just like a cracked pot, light shines brightest through the cracks where God is manifested in our weaknesses. Instead of hiding her weaknesses  Clairmont came to find that God loves using brokenness to display His power.

Jesus used a murderer (crackpot) to lead the entire nation of Israel to freedom from slavery in Egypt. Jesus used a Christian killer Paul (cracked pot) to write over half of the New Testament. God used a crooked government tax collector, Matthew, to be part of his entourage. Jesus picked a harlot, Rahab, a very cracked pot, to rescue Israel’s spies from the city of Jericho.

If God can shine His light in the fractures of these Bible heroes’ hearts, what stops us today in thinking God cannot do the same for  us? Why do we hide under the covers and in our beds from truth? Why are we so scared of being seen as broken? Jesus calls us to be vessels for God’s glory, cracks and all.

If you look hard in the mirror, you will see plenty of cracks. Don’t despise your weaknesses. Instead, use them for God’s glory and let Him shine through you.
