Hannah’s Horror Story Turned Legendary

I will find you in the place I’m in, find you when I’m at my end, Find you when there’s nothing left of me to offer you except for brokenness. You lift me up, you’ll never leave me thirsty, When I am weak, when I am lost and searching I’ll find you on my knees, my knees.

-Lyrics from Kari Jobe’s “Find You On My Knees”

Year after year, Hannah made the long trip to the temple. She watched as women walked beside her holding the hands of their children. She looked over at her husband, Elkanah, knowing she had not produced him a Son. Hannah was broken. More than anything, she wanted to have a child, yet God had not blessed her with one. She was weak, and in that weakness I am sure Satan began planting lies in her head that she was worthless and not valued. Hannah probably began to believe these lies and as she watched the women around her increase in the number of children, Hannah’s heart may have became even more broken. She may have compared herself to other women. Why would God bless them and not her?

To add to the hurt, Peninnah a woman who did have a child began taunting Hannah for being childless. Peninnah was a bully who provoked and irritated Hannah year after year until Hannah would begin to weep and not even be able to eat. And where did Hannah eventually find herself? She found herself at her end. She found herself engulfed in brokeness. She found herself searching and she found herself on her knees.

It is interesting to note that Hannah handed a bully not by retaliation and not by lashing out. She instead went to the house of the Lord and got on her knees and begged the Lord for help. The Lord was not to busy to hear the prayers of the bullied. Instead, he promised her a son. Not just any son, but a man who would one day be the highest ranking judge and close counsellor to Israel’s greatest kings. Hannah named her son Samuel which means “the Lord hears”.

At a very young age, Hannah brought her only son, Samuel, to the temple and gave him to the Lord to work in His house forever. She walked away from the gift God gave her. She followed the Lord’s wishes and he blessed her for it by providing her with even more children.

Sometimes, we may feel so thirsty and broken. We search every nook and cranny of the earth. We wont find complete happiness in football, friends, a spouse, our grades, or anything else on earth. One thing we can find hope and happiness in is following the will of God. Patiently waiting for Him to guide us and bless us will be a reward unlike any other. Hannah’s horror story ended in a lasting legacy. When we find ourselves on our knees, the Lord lifts us up and never leaves us thirsty.

1 Samuel 1:27-28 “ I asked the Lord to give me this boy, and he has granted my request. Now I am giving him to the Lord, and he will belong to the Lord his whole life. And they[j] worshiped the Lord there.”
