Not a Fan?

The social networking site Instagram is all about followers. With over 200,000 million users, the more followers you have, the more exposure and popularity you appear to have. For example, well known singer Justin Bieber has the most followers with over 20 million , and Kim Kardashian (a fashion mogul of sorts) has 17 million followers. Instagram photos are all the shape of an old Poloroid or Kodak photo. History reunited with fresh ideas and neat filters that only professional cameramen once had access to in the dark rooms across the country. While kids across America, beg their parents for access to this social network, America falls deeper into an online world where being a follower and being followed is synonymous with popular culture.

In Jesus’s day, He would have been a great Instagram user. I am sure He would have had a lot of followers. Jesus was relevant to His culture and went where the people were. If they were in the desert, He went there. If they were in cities untravelled by Jews, He was the first one there. Jesus took the time to find out where the population was at and went there every time.

How many of us are Bieber (i.e. Beliebers) and Kardashian fans online? How many of us are God fans. What do we put first in our life? Culture or the Bible? Do we read our Instagram feed, or Bible, first in the morning? Why should we hide the Bible in our hearts? Why should we memorize the verses within God’s Word. The Bible has its own statistics. It is the best selling book of all time with over 100 million sales of copies of the Bible.

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Psalm 119:11. Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian will give advice such as “let’s make the world better, together by joining my fan club” or “I love the Middle East, Join me In Dubai by downloading my app”. Which of these bring substance to your life? It has nothing to do with downloading apps or joining fan clubs. We need to be reading God’s Word, memorizing it, and applying it to our lives. We need to tell all those we know about a God who loves us even if we only have 5 followers. He is the biggest sensation the world has ever seen. He created Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian. He allows them to have a good voice, fame, and fortune here on earth. How well did they use their talents? That will be for God to judge. The question is, how much are you using what God gives you for His glory? Don’t forget about being a God fan in today’s culture. Don’t just like God, truly follow.
