Not Gonna Bow

In Bible times, “Idols” were made of wood, brass, and sometimes gold. Men and women across the world would bow down and worship these man-made statues. This became such a problem that the very first commandment issued by Moses to God’s people in Exodus 20:3-6 was “You must not have any other god but me You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.  You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.  But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.”

Traditionally, we do not see many people bowing down to a wooden statue, but it is not uncommon for people to replace God with cell phones, video games, friends, TV, boyfriends, girlfriends, wives, husbands, fame, power, popularity, work, and school. These things have become our idols. Are any of these things a “god” in your life? Meaning, do you put any of these things before God? If so, that is an idol. Idols are Satan’s “great idea”. If he can distract us from attending church, reading the Bible, and becoming close to God than he can reroute us from our true purpose for living.

Satan does not want us worshipping God. He does not want God “interrupting” our daily lives. He does not want God “marketed” in today’s courthouses, schools, or coins. He wants us to go through a complete day without one thought of living for or loving God. His tactics are unnoticed, but he uses today’s technology to distract us. He wants you to talk to your friends about toys, school, sports, and TV. He does not want you telling your friends about how kind God is for loving us despite our many sins. He wants you to continue to think that you are unworthy of God’s love. He wants to keep you at a distance. This is immediately what he did with Adam and Eve when they sinned. That is why they hid from God and ignored Him instead of going on their daily walks with Him. If he can keep us sinning, then maybe we will stay away.

God knows Satan’s tactics even in 2013. He understands the amount of “distractions” this generation would be exposed to. Even in the madness of “Breaking News”, social media, smart phones, tragedy and failures, God is the only constant in our lives. He never hides from us. He never betrays our trust. He is with you on the dance floor. He is with you in the school hallways. He is with you while you sit at your cubicle. He watches us sleep and knows when we awake. He longs for you to call out to him as you ride to work and school in the morning. He understands our hearts and our heartaches. Don’t allow “toys” to replace God. Don’t let distractions take away from our time with the Lord. When is the last time, you opened your Bible when you were not at church? Pray and ask God to keep us faithful and give us the discipline to replace serving man-made “idols” with the desire in serving the Lord. Show God, your “not gonna bow”.
