The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!” Matthew 8:27
People across the world have different names for Hurricanes. Scientists call them tropical cyclones while countries on the other side of the globe call them typhoons. Hurricanes never form over cold water; it takes warm water to fuel them. As the water evaporates and the warm air takes on pressure, clouds are formed and the whole system of wind and clouds spins and grows. As the storm spins faster, an eye is formed. Depending on whether the storm is north or south of the equator, the storm may spin clockwise or counterclockwise. When the winds hit 39 MPH, the storm is called a tropical storm. When the wind speeds hit 74 MPH, it is then called a hurricane. Though the storm is spinning and fast, the eye portion of the hurricane is calm and clear.
Don’t be afraid of storms. You are guaranteed that they will form in your life. The speeds can dizzy us forcing us to retreat into hiding, but when they hit we must search for the Eye of the Storm. Jesus can be that calming presence in our lives. He waits for you. Many of us see approaching storms and are seized with fear and anxiety. Rick Warren calls worry a form of “atheism” because we are saying “it all depends on me”. This is a harsh example, but makes us think about how Satan uses this storm of “worry” in our lives to pull us away from God.
Many times in the book of Job, God spoke to Job through a storm. Maybe the storms in your life are just that, ways to get your attention. Nahum warned the wicked city of Ninevah “The Lord is slow to anger but great in power; the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet. (Nahum 1:3) Remember, God is bigger than any storms.
