The Bullies

“Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed.”
Eph. 4:29 (TEV)

Last week, the world watched in horror as a group of middle schoolers in Rochester, NY verbally taunted a bus monitor for 10 excruciating minutes. The woman who was 68 years old and had worked with kids her entire life stated she tried to ignore them thinking they would stop but the kids continued. They called her “fat”, cursed her, hit her with a book, and continued until she began crying. This 10 minutes of bullying  was captured by a phone and went viral last week as the entire world watched.

Making fun of someone or “bullying” them is never ok. Remember, hurt people.. hurt people.  Jesus tells us to “live in peace with everyone”. He also wants us to be a “peacemaker” and to defend the “powerless”. Jesus gives us some advice when it comes to talking. “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
Prov. 12:18 (NIV) What does that mean? Remember reckless words are like “weapons of mass destruction” or “WMD’s”. Christians should never use WMD’s on others. Words, like WMD’s, can never be taken back and will destroy everything it touches. Little people belittle others.

This is what we are called to do. “You must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.”
Col. 3:8 (NIV)

In a world filled with conflict and war, Jesus calls Christians to be “agents of peace”. If you are a Christian, it is always YOUR move. We are not to come to worship if there is someone out there we have not reconciled with. That is how important, reconciliation is with God. Jesus came not to divide us, but to spread peace.. to stop the bullying.. to vindicate the bullied.. and to love the “bully”.

Have you bullied someone recently? Who? and Why?

Is there someone in your life that you have not reconciled with?

What does it mean “reckless words pierce like a sword”?
